Keep Them Coming Back for More

July 25, 2008

Believe it or not, people are creatures of habit. When we find something works and is useful to us, we tend to keep using it. I hope this does not surprise you, if it does, take a look at your own life. You probably get up at a certain time, make coffee, read the newspaper, go to work, and eat lunch, all at similar times throughout the week. Well, someone finally caught on to this and did a study on it at Northeastern University. They tracked the cell phone signal usage of 100,000 people and determined that these people generally follow the same routine, day after day. Aside from the creepiness of having someone track your cell phone usage and where you are, this provides some insight that can be useful for optimizing your sight.

Other than the fact that people obviously follow patterns, what else can we learn from this research? Why do these people follow the same patterns? We could say that they are used to it and they don’t think about it much. I think, however, that it has more to do with utilitarian means than anything else. The things these people do, they have been doing and they have found something that is both useful and helpful to their lives. The patterns they follow generally, at least in their minds, make their lives easier.

Let’s apply this to your site. One of the best ways to build credibility is through having reputable people link to you, and having a greater share of the market. Wouldn’t it be helpful if you had people who continually came to your site, and no one else’s, simply because they were accustomed to it and they found it useful? This research says that this is possible. If you can find a way to make your site more useful and attractive to your customers, more than likely, you can keep them coming back for more.

So, what does this lesson teach us? To make your site more profitable, it is a good idea to get people to keep coming back. To do this, you must find a way to make your site more attractive to them. Give them a reason to keep coming back to you and not to someone else. This is yet more proof that building content on your site is the key ingredient to your success. Getting ranked is one thing. If you do not have the content to back it up, it is worthless because people will not find you useful. So, take a lesson from your own routine, and make your website an integral part of your customer’s day.
