Building Your Own Site Directory

July 30, 2008

So, you have your site. Everything seems to be going smoothly, except that you notice that your visitors don’t seem to be increasing. Your site has basically stagnated. There are numerous possible causes of this, many things you should be continually looking to fix, but here is one that may not be so obvious: your site’s directory structure. By this, I of course mean the way in which your site is organized. Pages in folders and subfolders, sometimes so far away from your home page that your site looks more like a labyrinth.

You can guess that I am going to attribute part of your lack of success to your lack of organization. You don’t need to get extremely detailed with your organization, just clean it up a bit. There is plenty of room for you to set your site up, exactly as you want to set it up, but one of the keys is to make sure that it is easy to use. The harder it is for a visitor to find something, the more likely they are to give up and search somewhere else for it. This problem also brings up the importance of landing page content but that is another issue.

Here are some suggestions for setting your site up in a manner that is easy to navigate but still allows you to do what you want.

Rather than having each page come directly off your homepage, try creating subdirectories where you can group related content. Though a smaller site may be more efficiently managed by linking each page to your home age, as your site grows, it is important to set up a hierarchy. By setting up a hierarchy, your customers can more easily navigate through your site as well as find the more relevant results and possibly related products. Search engines also appreciate hierarchy because it provides direction as far as search results are concerned. As you add more pages, there are definitely pages that are of more importance than others are and this is shown by their relationship in your structure.

Though hierarchy is important, it is also important to make sure that you are not setting up too many sub categories. The more categories that you add, the more difficult it is to navigate across your site. Though you do want hierarchy on your site, too many categories removes pages too far from your home page. The key is ease of use, not over organization. Also, the deeper your site is, the longer it takes to index your whole site and the less likely someone is to find exactly what they are looking to find.

Creating a site directory does not need to be an all consuming task, but building one that makes your site easier to navigate is definitely worth the trouble. The satisfaction you can provide for your customers and the increased likelihood that they will continue using your site can provide you with greater revenue and a more successful site.
