Turn Your Visitors into Customers with Google Site Search

June 4, 2008

Perhaps this is a slight boast on Google’s part, but it does capture the idea behind Google’s recently rebranded Site Search. Formerly known as the Business Edition, Google’s site search is an easy to use tool for your website. Along with the name change, Google has released four new features: enhanced index coverage, synonyms, date biasing, and top results biasing. Each of these new features is designed to assist your customers with finding the results you want them to find. In addition to these features, Google also allows for customization of the look and feel of the search.

The enhanced index coverage increases both the amount of indexing done on your site, as well as allows for deeper indexing so that a more complete picture of your website is captured. Having your website crawled to this extent is always useful and ensures that the cache is up to date.

The synonyms feature allows you to input search term synonyms to make sure that results are targeted to your specific product and will allow your customers to get results without having to search multiple times. This feature also allows you to upload a synonym dictionary specific to your site or one that you customize, ensuring that results are relevant to your site and do not deviate from your objectives.

The date biasing feature allows you to make sure that results with more recent dates are returned first. Administrators have the ability to turn this feature off to suit their needs, but returning items that are more recent and possibly more relevant items as well.

Finally, the top results biasing capability allows you to target the top results from certain sections of your website. This provides the capability to push product pages to the top of the results page to increase your marketing capabilities.

The search results are ad free, removing some of the clutter from the results, but there is the option to couple the results with adSense. Having fewer advertisements on the page assists in keeping customers on your site rather than pointing them to one of your competitors. As far as pricing goes, the price is determined by the number of pages and establishes a query limit. Google assures those interested, however, that most pages will never have to worry about the query limit and that those who are concerned can contact a Google representative to discuss pricing options.

Adding Google Site Search to your website is a good way to both direct traffic and ensure the ease of your site. With Google’s new additions, there is a greater ability for your visitors to find your products and information and a better chance that they will choose to use you over your competitors. Of course, other search options can be just as useful. This is just one option that may suit your needs.
