Paid Links Unleashed

June 27, 2008

The biggest question to ask yourself when considering paid links is whether it is worth it or not. While in the past, arguments have been made that paid links are a good thing, or that they are a bad thing, there are several things that you need to consider before delving into the deep world of paid linking.

While many sites, particularly larger ones, will jump at the chance to make a few extra bucks off the empty space on their site, you should be cautious when engaging in any of these three practices: selling links, brokering links, and buying links. Each of these carries its own inherent dangers and you would do well to acknowledge the potential consequences before you decide to participate in any of them.

Selling links has been the perennial bad guy in this realm. In the past, the site selling links has been reprimanded and has lost either credibility or rankings. While this still happens, link sellers have recently ceased being the sole enemy here. Link buyers have also started to reap their not so great rewards. These sites previously seemed immune to the recourses taken against link buying, supposedly being the unknowing victims of this practice.

The third group, however, link brokers, is the one that seems to be at the root of the issue and is also the group that does not reap any punishment for its actions. This may largely be due to the fact that link brokers are hard to track and find. Link brokers essentially buy links from a site and sell them to another site. While this seems fairly straightforward, link brokers understand the possible consequences of their trade and employ several different practices that cloak the links they sell and make it more difficult to track more than one link to them.

Understanding these three roles, link buying and selling is still a difficult matter. Google tends to be more lenient with its punishment on highly valued sites and harsher on lower ranked competitors, but this does not ensure your sites safety. Incurring the wrath of Google can wreck months of work on your site and SEO. Paid links, however, seem to be one of the best ways to market your site. The difficulty comes in when assessing the value of your links. The more random and untraceable your paid links are the less chance you have of being caught. Ensuring that you take as much precaution as possible when buying and selling links is your best bet for reaping rewards rather than punishment.
