Google’s Persistent Growth

June 3, 2008

Google\'s Persistent GrowthWhen determining your ad campaign strategy, you obviously want to consider what is going to get you the most coverage. A part of this is determining how to reach your target audience and what means are the best in doing this. Determining where to spend your advertising dollars in your search engine campaign, whether on Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, or another search engine, can be a vital part of saving and creating an effective budget.

This particular item reminds me of the way a puppy grows. Forgive the comparison, but it seems that whenever you look at a puppy, it has grown, at least a little, since the last time you looked at it. Google has done the same thing recently. About 2 weeks ago, comScore released their most recent Search Engine Rankings for the month of April. At the head of the pack was Google. Most interesting about the data, however, is the relation of Google’s growth to the overall growth in searches.

ComScore reports that the volume of searches between March and April actually declined by 1%. Google’s growth, however, was 2%. This is clear evidence of its ever-growing share in the search engine market. Yahoo and MSN both showed a decline, 3% and 5% respectively. These numbers are related to their numbers in March. Overall, as far as the market is concerned, Yahoo showed a .9% decrease while Microsoft showed a .3% decrease.

Google has continuously shown an increase in its market share, showing about a 6% increase in overall market share over approximately the past year. Not only does this reflect Google’s share of the market, it also shows the continuing increase of the raw number of searches. As web traffic continually increases, 3.7% in the first four months of this year, knowing where this new traffic is going is essential is gaining new customers and expanding your business.

By no means does this data indicate that Yahoo and Microsoft are on their way out the door, but it does show the usefulness of Google in your campaigns. In a market that is continually fluctuating, ensuring that you have the most exposure to consumers is vital. Realizing where most of your traffic originates is useful in determining how to enhance and expand your ad campaigns, as well as deciding the best way to spend your advertising budget.
