Google SiteLinks: How to Get Them

June 17, 2008

I do not claim to know how you can actually get SiteLinks to show up under your listing on Google. I do want, however, to put forth a couple of ideas that I have run across that might shed some light on the subject. I am sure there are a million factors, just as link popularity is not the only determining factor in your search rank, I don’t think that any of these is the clear and simple answer to the question.

One theory is that SiteLinks are given to a site when it is oriented to its visitors. This means that the easier it is for a visitor to navigate the site, the more likely that site is to be rewarded with SiteLinks. This seems a fair theory and is the most complementary to site users. It also seems to be at least somewhat acknowledged by Google and would account for variances in different geographic regions.

Another theory centers on Domain Authority. Simply put, sites that are stronger and more respected by Google get SiteLinks, and the others don’t. Google, when speaking of getting SiteLinks, encourages marketers to work on making their site more visible and stronger in their field. While this is a far cry from acknowledging that this is the key, it does lend some credence to the idea.

Perhaps, SiteLinks are determined by the internal architecture of your website. The more structure and organized a site is, the more likely it is to receive SiteLinks. This is similar to the first theory in that it determines the ease of use of your site and uses this to help determine whether you will receive SiteLinks.

Some other theories include SEO practices such as putting the links at the beginning of your source code, the brand strength, and the amount of competition there is in your field. The latter two speak specifically to your strength and are similar to the second idea that focuses on domain authority. The similarities and continuities behind these theories speak to the fact that there are several things at work. No theory completely explains the best way to get SiteLinks from Google, but there are some common elements that you can control.

The first theme is to make sure that your site is user friendly. Working on this aspect can only help your site anyway and the added benefit of SiteLinks is worth the effort. The second theme is a focus on strength. You need to establish your site as an authority and something worthy of a second look. The stronger your site is, the better your marketing ability. Combining these two themes, you get a good picture of what you should be focusing on whether you are looking to get SiteLinks or not: your audience and your content.
